Overview
The term "SCMS" is an abbreviation which stands for Serial Copyright Management System.
The basic idea is to allow the consumer to make digital copies of copyrighted material for only one "generation." If an attempt is made to copy this first generation copy, the SCMS causing the recording machine to remain in mute or to display an error message and prevented recording.
Due to a number of technical issues, the system was easily circumvented, and most pro-oriented can be set to disregard this information.
