Post DA11 ?
Hi,

I just wanted to have a look at the forum and what did I find? The brand new DA11. USB input, a remote, a sophisticated crossfeed, ...

Dan/Priscilla/Brad any more info, availability, expected price, anything?

Congratulations to the new product!

Thomas

Hello Thomas

The DA11 is available now. The price is $1480.
The conversion is somewhat better then DA10 unit, I tightened up a few things.

The 4 inputs are XLR, Optical USB and RCA. The USB implementation offers up to 24 bits and up to 96KHz. The computer recognizes the DA11 when it is plugged in as "Lavry DA". The user does not need to download a driver. It works with Windows and Mac OS.

Also, the user can select balanced, unbalanced Pin 2 hot or unbalanced pin 3 hot from the front panel, no need to open the chassis and move jumpers.

The user gets to control signal inversion, dim the display intensity and turn OUTPUT ON/OFF which applies to the XLR output signals (the headphone stays on).

The unit parameter setting is real easy: The left selection switch moves a blinking cursor, (up for move left, down for move right). Activating the right selection switch down "SET" is a "yes/no" (it alters the selection of the function highlighted by the cursor). When done, just hit "Exit". The last settings are of course stored in a memory for a future power up.

The DA11 has additional protection for headphones: like DA10, both power up and down activates”loud click elimination" on the XLR, but the DA11 also protects power up and power down on the headphones.

The real unique feature is the PIC (playback image control). Here we have a whole industry that optimizes the stereo image based on assumptions. Say the mastering engineer works hard to provide a great stereo, and the assumption is that all listeners will have their home setup be nearly the same as the mastering studio. Many people do not (or can not) follow such ideal guidelines for speaker placement. And of course, anyone that wants to listen to headphones gets a very different stereo image then intended. Why? With speakers, the left signal gets to BOTH ears (similarly for the right signal). But with headphones, the left signal reaches ONLY the left ear (and the right signal ONLY to the right ear). The PIC provides correction for headphones and for speaker location. The user gets to correct the image at the listening space, AFTER the music has been prepared. It is only the end users that can make the final adjustment for their specific case, thus PLAYBACK Image Control.

While in most cases one would set the stereo image width with the same setting for Left and Right, I decided to offer separate Left and Right control, mostly for asymmetrical speaker setups. There are 6 settings for the left and 6 for the right.

+2 - widest (red)
+1 - wide (red)
0 - normal image (green)
-1 - narrow (yellow)
-2 - narrower (yellow)
-3 - narrowest (yellow)

The Image switches operate horizontally making the "hand motion" of setting the image corresponds to what one hears.

The image control, as well as volume and mute can also be set from a remote control. The unit is "remote ready" for use with any universal remote control devices.

The digitally controlled ANALOG volume control in the DA11 is the same as in the DA10.

To summarize, the DA11 is an improved DA10 with some new features, the main three features are the Playback Image Control (TM), the USB interface and the remote control.

The front and rear panels tell a lot of the story.

Regards
Dan Lavry

Where is the "lock light?

When in normal operation mode, the 2 digit LED display shows volume settings.

But when the unit is in setup mode, the 2 digit LED reads "44" or "48" or "88" or "96" to indicate that the unit is locked, and the frequency it is locked to.

If you see a "--", there is no signal at the selected input (XLR, Optical, USB or RCA).

Hi Dan,

Great.

I'm in the UK so I guess I should give Soundtools a call... :D

I bought a DA10 approx 3 months ago and would be very interested in hearing how the DA11 improves things.

Through my high-end Naim system (552/500) the DA10 sounds awesome!!

Where can I currently purchase the unit in the US? Can't find it listed on any of the usual sites nor the Lavry store front.

Post Invert via remote?
Based on the PDF user manual, it looks like the Invert function is not available via the remote. Is that true? If so, I fervently hope you add that feature in a firmware upgrade.

Because Invert is useful to correct the polarity of a given recording, I believe it should be part of the Operating mode, not the Setting mode.

Also, placing the Invert LED in the middle of a row of LED's makes it hard to identify from a distance. It would be more user-friendly for remote control usage if you moved it to one end or the other of the row. Better yet, give it a dedicated LED instead of combining it with the PIC array. It looks like there's room for it on the front panel above the infrared remote sensor or to the right of the power switch.

Now that you've taken the trouble to add an infrared remote, you might as well get the maximum functionality from it! Thanks.

At home DA11 is hooked into the optical digital out of our flatscreen TV . The stereo powered speakers are hooked directly to DA11 analog outputs via XLR cables. We currently use a universal remote.

It is great!!.

A quick DA-11 question. Does the PIC effect take place in the digital realm or analog (like the volume control)?

Some images on the manual were downsampled very bad. They're unreadable. Please fix it.

So the DA10 PLL mode select (wide/narrow/crystal) is gone.

Out of interest, has the need for this been somehow designed out in the DA11 ? In particular, should the DA11 sound as good as the DA10 in "crystal" mode ?

Thanks!
